Application Procedure for Students of College of Engineering


The participants and alternates will be selected through the following application process:

  • Attend an information session: Attend one of the two information sessions for the application procedure, which are designed to answer questions about the study tour, participation requirements, participant selection criteria, and the application process:
    • 12:00 Noon – 1:00 PM, April 3 (Thursday) in Room ENG 189
    • 12:00 Noon – 1:00 PM April 16 (Wednesday) in ENG 189
  • Apply on-line and submit hardcopy transcript(s):
    • (a) Submit an on-line application (including an essay not exceeding 500 words) at http://www.engr.sjsu.edu/forms/gti/apply before the deadline of 5PM, Friday, April 25, 2008.
    • (b) Submit hardcopy transcript(s) for all college work to the dean’s office at ENG 493 before the deadline. Note: transcript(s) must contain the grades achieved in Fall 2007. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable. Highlight your SJSU GPA, overall college GPA and grades for courses of your major on your transcripts.
  • Attend an interview, if invited: Semifinalists (i.e., those selected after the initial screening process) will be notified and invited to an interview for the final selection.
  • All selected participants and alternates will be notified by Friday, May 9, 2008


Participation Requirements


Selection of participants and Alternates

Twenty-five students will be selected as participants in the study tour. Additionally, five alternates will be selected from the College of Engineering. When a selected participant cannot or decides not to fully participate in the study tour, he/she will be replaced by an alternate. Alternates will be placed on an ordered waiting list.


Participant Selection Criteria

Applicants satisfying the requirements specified above will be selected based on how they and the College of Engineering can benefit from their participation in this program, and how they can help achieve the mission of the Global Technology Initiative. Participant selection will be a complex process; the selection criteria include, but are not limited to:

  • Grade-point average (GPA)
  • Global perspective and curiosity about foreign countries (particularly about India) on both a cultural and professional level
  • Service to SJSU student organizations or non-SJSU community organizations; past, current and future leadership positions
  • Communication and interpersonal skills
  • Work experience in engineering


Minimum Eligibility Requirements

  • Applicants must be a U.S. Citizen or permanent U.S. resident. Note: Permanent residents must hold a Passport from their country of citizenship.
  • If a permanent resident, must not hold an Indian passport.
  • The applicant must be a matriculated undergraduate student of the College of Engineering at SJSU. Graduate students, transitory, or Open-University students are not eligible.
  • Graduate students, Open University students, and alumni are not eligible.
  • Graduation date must not be earlier than December 2009.
  • Must have a minimum 2.5 GPA at SJSU and overall.


Requirements for Travel

The two-week study-tour of India will be scheduled between December 27, 2008 and January 14, 2009.


Requirements for Tech 198 Registration

Selected participants and alternates will be required to register for a three-unit course – Tech 198 Section 1 – Technology and Civilization. This course will satisfy your upper division GE requirement for area V.

Participant will receive an incomplete in the course until satisfaction of all requirements (including the student presentation, reflection statement, survey, and 10 page essay).


Deposit

Selected participants must provide a $250 deposit (check made out to the College of Engineering) to secure your spot. If the participant fails to satisfy all trip requirements (pre-trip, trip, and post-trip) or drops out early the deposit will be cashed to cover trip expenses.


Attendance Requirements for Tech 198, Information Session, Pre-trip Lectures, Orientation and Post-trip Debriefing Meetings

Selected participants are required to attend all the Tech 198 classes as well as the activities scheduled for pre-trip and post-trip to India. The meeting time for the course will be Thursday 6:00PM – 8:40PM. You must not schedule any other activities during this time period.

Selected finalists and alternates will be organized into groups, which will be required to research (prior to the trip) a range of subjects including global supply chains for high tech industries and the companies and universities to be visited during the study tour. Each group will work with a faculty adviser, and a small number of group meetings will be scheduled. Other mandatory debriefing activities and the companion tasks will be specified and scheduled in due course.

Anyone missing any two scheduled meetings or being late twice to scheduled meetings will be replaced by one of the alternates. GTI has a lot of requirements; if you do not feel you will be able to satisfy them all please do not apply.


Required Travel Documents

Selected participants and alternates will be required to secure their own passports immediately after notification of their selection. For more information, please go to http://travel.state.gov/passport/passport_1738.html.

Failure to obtain the necessary passport by November 16, 2008 will result in disqualification for the trip.


Vaccination Requirements

  • Applicants are required to visit http://wwwn.cdc.gov/travel/destinationIndia.aspx#vaccines for details about The Center for Disease Control vaccination recommendations for travel to India.
  • The applicant, if selected either as a participant or an alternate, is strongly recommended by CDC to receive vaccination for Hepatitis A, 4 –6 weeks prior to travel.


Health Requirements

The applicant must be in good health and not suffering from any serious medical conditions at the time of application and immediately before the study tour that would put them in risk during travel. If the applicant develops such conditions after being selected as a participant or an alternate, he/ she must inform the College of Engineering upon diagnosis.

Insurance Requirements

Participants will be required to purchase insurance from https://www.csuhealthlink.com/custompolicies/globalprod/products.aspx.

The applicant, if first selected as an alternate and then notified to replace a selected participant, must arrange for the insurance policies listed above upon notification of selection, and must be able to secure such insurance before the trip.


University Liability Waiver

The applicant must agree to sign a waiver form releasing the San Jose State University from all possible liability claims.


Required Student Code of Conduct

  • Participants will be expected to behave as representatives of SJSU and the U.S.
  • Proper student conduct applicable to on-campus activities are applicable and are observed throughout the study tour. Violators will be disciplined upon return to campus.
  • All participants will be required to observe local laws and customs. Violators will be disciplined upon return to campus.
  • No relatives or friends may accompany the participants during any portion of the trip.
  • All participants will begin the trip at the designated location in the U.S. as a group. They will stay with the group throughout the trip, except that they may leave the group at the conclusion of all site visits of the study tour.
  • No alcohol consumption is allowed at any time during the study tour. Evening curfews may be imposed, depending on tour schedule.

Food and lodging during travel

  • Double occupancy of hotel rooms will be required. A roommate will be assigned, but the assignment may be on a daily basis.
  • Efforts will be made to arrange for American food if requested, but special diets cannot be accommodated during the trip.
